News from Cuban Committee for Democracy
Alejandro Portes, president of the CCD, offered
the keynote address at a global conference on
Transnationalism and its Challenges,organized by the
Autonomous University of Barcelona. While in Spain, he
met with prominent academic authorities and political
figures, both in Barcelona and Madrid, to discuss
chances for a political transition in Cuba and possible
contributions by Spain toward that goal. Portes is
currently conducting a large-scale study of immigrant
communities in Madrid.
Alejandro Portes,
President of the CCD, traveled to the
Dominican Republic on January 21 – 25 to meet with
his research team in a comparative study
of Latin
American institutions and development,
being conducted in five Latin American countries. While
in Santo Domingo, Portes offered a lecture on the role
of transnational organizations in the political
incorporation process of Latin immigrants in the United
States. The lecture was attended by important
personalities of the Dominican academic and political
world.
During the visit, he also met with
advisors of Dominican president Leonel Fernandez to
discuss possible roles that the country could play in
fostering a democratic transition in Cuba. |
